Lycanthropes

Lycanthropes are the anti-thesis to the nightwalker.  While nightwalkers were created using blood magic, which also left them dependent on blood magic, lycanthropes are the result of earth magic wielded by the naturi.  Lycanthropes are shape-shifters.  The majority of lycanthropes are humans that  can shift into a type of wolf or fox.  However, they are not limited to those animals.  There are a limited few that can shift into other animals such as bears, large cats, and even large raptors.  However, a lycanthrope can shift into only one type of animal.  He or she cannot shift into a both a mountain lion and a wolf.  That animal becomes a part of his identity and helps to mold his personality as a human.

Lycanthropes are more typically born than made.  When two lycanthropes breed, it is highly likely, though not guaranteed, that their offspring will also be a lycanthrope.  However, there are some humans that are more susceptible to the lycanthropic disease and an attack that draws blood can sometimes result in that person becoming a lycanthrope.  Lycanthrope reproduction is very low, keeping their population relatively small in comparison to nightwalkers and humans.

The creation of the lycanthrope is the result of the centuries-long war that has been waged between the naturi and the bori.  Tired of fighting each other, the two sides decided to create their own foot soldiers.  So the naturi took some humans and imbued them special powers, making them lycanthropes, while the bori created nightwalkers.

Lycanthropes take on the special gifts of the animals that they shift into as well as have the ability to tap into the power coming from the earth.  Lycanthropes are faster than humans, have a stronger sense of smell,  stronger sense of hearing, and can heal faster than a normal humans.  Lycanthropes are also extremely strong and have a slower rate of aging than the normal human.  Most lycanthropes will live a lifespan of close to 150 years if allowed to die of natural causes.

When shifting into their animal form, the person does not lose any of their human body mass.  As a result, a large man will become an extraordinarily large wolf or mountain lion.

Furthermore, where nightwalkers tend to be solitary creatures, all lycanthropes are pack animals. They live and thrive in packs with a set hierarchy.  There is typically a single lead male, which is referred to an as an Alpha.  He will sometimes have a mate, which is the female Alpha.  The rest of the pack members are referred to as Betas.  Lone lycanthropes or rogue without a pack are thought of as Omegas.
